Investing in the Future of Care: Ashton Guay’s Journey Toward Physical Therapy

For Ashton Guay, health care is more than a career path—it’s a calling shaped by his determination, his Adirondack roots, and his family’s example. This summer, Ashton was awarded a $3,500 Healthcare Scholarship from the Adirondack Health Foundation to support his studies in Physical Therapy at Ithaca College for the 2025–2026 academic year.

Ashton’s decision to enter the field of physical therapy didn’t happen by chance. Growing up, he saw how healthcare professionals could transform lives—restoring strength, dignity, and independence. That perspective was made even more personal by watching his mother, who serves as Director of Perioperative Services at Adirondack Health. Her dedication to patient care and leadership within the hospital gave Ashton a firsthand view of the impact a compassionate healthcare provider can have, not just on patients, but on entire families.

With that inspiration, Ashton has worked hard to carve out his own path. His studies at Ithaca College are preparing him for a career where every patient encounters is an opportunity to help someone recover, rebuild, and return to the life they love. The scholarship he received is more than financial support—it is a community’s belief in his potential. “It means a lot to know that my community believes in me and wants to see me succeed,” Ashton said. “This support helps me focus on my studies and reminds me that one day, I’ll be able to give back in the same way.”

Part of the award includes a commitment to return to Adirondack Health after graduation, serving patients in the same region that has nurtured him. For Ashton, this feels less like a requirement and more like a full-circle journey: carrying forward his mother’s legacy of care while making his own mark in the field of physical therapy.

As he prepares for the next chapter at Ithaca College, Ashton carries with him more than tuition support. He carries the values instilled by his family, the encouragement of his community, and the determination to return as a skilled professional ready to serve the Adirondacks. His story reflects what the Adirondack Health Foundation believes at its core: Together for Good. Together, we are investing in education and training to grow the next generation of healthcare professionals—and to keep high-quality care right here at home.
