Calling to Care: Brooke Furlong
Calling to Care: Brooke Furlong
In the small town of Long Lake, where everyone knows their neighbors and community runs deep, Brooke Furlong has always felt drawn to helping others. From an early age, she sensed that caring for people was more than something she enjoyed, it was something she was meant to do.
That calling became clearer when Brooke joined the Long Lake Rescue Squad as its very first Junior EMT. Riding along on ambulance calls, earning her CPR and first aid certifications, and beginning her EMT training, Brooke discovered the impact of being there for people at their most vulnerable. “Helping others and making a positive difference in people’s lives has resonated with me and brought me a sense of belonging,” she reflected.

At the same time, Brooke poured her energy into school and community life. She rose to the top of her class as Salutatorian, led the National Honor Society and Green Team, served on Student Council, and still found time to captain both the varsity softball and soccer teams. Whether volunteering with the Lions Club, lending a hand at the Fish & Game Club, or logging more than 150 hours of service, Brooke has lived by the belief that strong communities are built when everyone contributes.
Now, Brooke is ready to take the next step in her journey. This fall, she begins studying nursing at Colby-Sawyer College, with dreams of becoming an emergency department nurse and ultimately focusing on pediatrics. Inspired by the calm, compassionate ER nurses she has seen in action, Brooke hopes to bring that same steady presence to her own future patients.
To help her pursue this dream, the Adirondack Health Foundation proudly awarded Brooke a 2025 Healthcare Scholarship. For Brooke, the award is more than financial support—it is a vote of confidence that her hard work and compassion will shape a brighter future for healthcare in the Adirondacks.
“I can definitely see myself coming back here,” Brooke said. “I love this area, and I’m very, very lucky to contribute.”
Brooke’s story is proof that when we invest in students with a heart for service, we’re also investing in stronger, healthier communities for generations to come.
Together for Good, we celebrate Brooke’s journey and the impact she is destined to make as a nurse, neighbor, and leader.
