Foundation Scholarship Program: Shaping Healthcare Careers in Our Region
For Jennifer Phelabaum, a career in healthcare always felt like the right path. With her mother working in the pharmacy at Adirondack Health for many years, Jennifer spent much of her childhood around the hospital, watching dedicated professionals care for patients. Seeing their compassion and commitment, she knew she wanted to be part of that world—to make a difference in the lives of people in her community.
Her journey into healthcare officially began in high school when she participated in the New Vision Program, where she earned 13 college credits and gained hands-on clinical experience. The experience confirmed what she had always known: nursing was her calling. But pursuing that dream required more than hard work—it required financial support.
In 2013, Jennifer received a scholarship from the Adirondack Health Foundation, a pivotal moment in her career path. The scholarship eased the financial burden of higher education, allowing her to focus on her studies without the constant worry of tuition costs. More than just financial support, it reinforced the belief that her community was invested in her future.

With that support, Jennifer earned her nursing degree at Castleton University, completing clinical rotations at Rutland Regional Medical Center and Glens Falls Hospital. She worked while finishing her bachelor’s degree, then continued her education by pursuing her master’s degree, all while working per diem. In December 2023, she achieved another milestone—earning Doctor of Nursing Practice.
Jennifer’s commitment to Adirondack Health remained strong throughout her career. Early in her tenure, she found herself on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, working in the COVID clinic, where she helped test and treat patients during one of the most challenging periods in modern healthcare. The experience reinforced her resilience and dedication, deepening her connection to the patients she served.
Now a Nurse Practitioner, she provides care to the very people she grew up with, ensuring that patients in the region have access to high-quality, compassionate healthcare.
Jennifer’s dedication to Adirondack Health extends beyond patient care—she is also deeply committed to giving back. As a participant in the Cornerstone Campaign, she is helping to improve patient care through critical facility updates and renovations.
"Giving back is part of our culture here. The Cornerstone Campaign helps enhance the great care we provide. I worked on the floors and saw firsthand the need to improve patient rooms and reconfigure them to provide greater comfort for both patients and staff."
Outside of work, Jennifer embraces the Adirondack lifestyle—skiing, hiking, and canoeing with her husband. She and her mother are currently working on hiking the 46 Adirondack high peaks, a challenge that reflects the same dedication and perseverance she brings to her career.
For Jennifer, the Adirondack Health Foundation Scholarship Program was more than just financial aid—it was an investment in her future and in the future of healthcare in the region. Because of this support, she was able to achieve her goals and remain in the Adirondacks, caring for her community.
"I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of the Foundation and its donors. Their generosity shaped my career, and I hope to pay it forward by serving my community for years to come."
By supporting students like Jennifer, the Adirondack Health Foundation Scholarship Program continues to shape healthcare careers and ensure that the region has skilled, compassionate providers for generations to come.
