Local Leaders Unite to Advance Rural Healthcare in the Adirondacks

The panel explored the realities of delivering care in rural communities, including workforce challenges, access to services, behavioral health needs, and the importance of cross-sector collaboration to support patients both inside and outside the hospital setting. Aaron Kramer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Adirondack Health, emphasized that “resiliency in rural healthcare depends on collaboration across hospitals, education, public health, and communities.”

On March 20, the Adirondack Health Foundation hosted its inaugural Rural Health Symposium at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake, New York, bringing together more than 80 local and regional attendees to discuss and help shape the future of healthcare across the Adirondack Park.

Centered on the theme “Navigating Change: The State of Rural Healthcare in an Uncertain Era,” the symposium created a forum for dialogue, collaboration, and forward-thinking solutions aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery in rural communities.

The program featured a keynote overview by Kevin Kerwin, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Iroquois Healthcare Association, followed by a panel discussion with regional leaders representing healthcare administration, clinical care, public health, and workforce development. Panelists included Aaron Kramer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Adirondack Health; Amy Corliss, MD, Medical Director of the Hospitalist Program; Joe Keegan, President of North Country Community College; and Hannah Busman, MPH, Public Health Director of Franklin County Public Health Services.

The discussion highlighted both the challenges and opportunities facing rural health systems, including innovative partnerships, workforce pipeline development, and the increasing importance of addressing social determinants of health to improve patient outcomes. Jen Balog, Executive Director of the Adirondack Health Foundation, described the symposium as “a call to action,” emphasizing the importance of continuing these discussions and building on the momentum to strengthen healthcare across the region.

The event reinforced the Foundation’s mission to support Adirondack Health through philanthropy, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, ensuring that high-quality care remains accessible close to home. Building on the success of this inaugural event, the Adirondack Health Foundation plans to continue convening partners, fostering collaboration, and establishing the Rural Health Symposium as an annual initiative to sustain ongoing dialogue and progress in rural healthcare.

Adirondack Health Foundation and Merrill Center for Oncology to host inaugural Cancer Survivors Breakfast June 6 in Saranac Lake

“This event is about honoring every individual’s journey and reminding survivors that they are never alone,” said Kristina Hybicki, LCSW, a social worker at the Merrill Center for Oncology and one of the organizers of the event. “Many of our patients build lasting relationships with our oncology team during treatment, and this breakfast gives us an opportunity to celebrate life, healing, and the incredible strength of our community together.”

A special symbol woven throughout the event is the daffodil, long recognized as an international symbol of hope and resilience within the cancer community. Because daffodils are among the first flowers to bloom after winter, they represent renewal, new beginnings, and the strength to keep moving forward, making them especially meaningful to some cancer survivors and their families.

The morning gathering reflects the close-knit nature of the Adirondack community, where care often extends far beyond clinical treatment.

“We’re so grateful to partner with our oncology department to help bring this event to life,” said Emily Moulton of the Adirondack Health Foundation. “This breakfast is about more than sharing a meal. It’s a chance to bring people together and celebrate the strength of our community.”

The Adirondack Health Foundation, in partnership with Adirondack Health’s Merrill Center for Oncology, will host its inaugural Cancer Survivors Breakfast on Saturday, June 6, at 8 a.m. at Voco Saranac Lake’s Lakeside Drift restaurant.

The complimentary breakfast is open to cancer survivors throughout the Tri-Lakes region and one guest, offering a meaningful opportunity for survivors to come together, share a meal, connect with others who understand their journey, and celebrate hope, resilience, and healing.

While this is the first year Adirondack Health is hosting the event, cancer survivor celebrations have long served as important moments of connection and encouragement within oncology communities across the country. Adirondack Health hopes this gathering will become a new tradition for local survivors and their families.

A Legacy of Specialized Mental Health Care

The Colby Center was created to support adults 50 and older experiencing significant mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, behavioral changes, and acute psychiatric symptoms. Patients are admitted either through the emergency department during a mental health crisis or transferred from other hospitals when they require the specialized support Colby provides.

From the beginning, the goal has been simple and unwavering: to provide a calm, structured, therapeutic environment where patients can begin to regain control of their lives.

Over the years, the unit has adapted its programs to meet the evolving mental health needs of older adults. Today, the average stay is about two weeks, and every patient receives a personalized plan that focuses on emotional well-being, coping skills, and a supportive transition back home or to the next stage of care.

Many of The Colby Center’s team members have dedicated their careers to this program. Psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, mental health technicians, and administrative staff all work together to create an environment grounded in patience, empathy, and respect for their patients. Together, they offer calm in moments of confusion, encouragement in moments of fear, and dignity in moments when it is needed most.

For over 25 years, the Colby Center Senior Behavioral Health Unit has quietly stood as one of our region’s essential resources. As the only geriatric psychiatric unit in the North Country, this 12-bed program provides acute, short-term inpatient care for older adults experiencing severe mental health needs. Beyond its clinical role, Colby has become a place where healing, empathy, and human connection guide every moment.

Meeting Basic Needs with Extraordinary Compassion

Many patients arrive at The Colby Center with few or no personal belongings. This requires them to wear only paper gowns, scrubs, or clothing that is tattered and ill-fitting. The staff at The Colby Center have long understood how deeply this affects a person’s sense of self.

For years, staff purchased clothing for new Colby Center patients themselves. Their generosity spoke volumes to the compassionate care they provided, but it wasn’t a sustainable practice. Once the Adirondack Health Foundation found out about these kind staff members, they knew they had to help create a sustainable system to provide greater dignity for those in Colby. The Adirondack Health Foundation established a dedicated Colby Clothing Fund, ensuring everyone entering the unit can receive clean, comfortable attire, in their proper size, during their stay, and receive a set to take home at discharge. This program officially launched last year, with it’s first gift from The Chapel Hill Foundation.

Now the Colby Center can maintain a small clothing closet stocked with new lounge sets, pajamas, slippers, and socks in a variety of sizes for new patients. These simple necessities help restore a sense of dignity during an incredibly vulnerable time.

A Lifeline for Seniors and Families

For older adults experiencing a psychiatric crisis, and for the families who love them, the Colby Center is more than a hospital unit. It is a lifeline, a rare resource, and a place where expertise meets empathy at every bedside.

While the Colby Center has changed over the years to better treat patients, what has remained constant is the heart of its mission: to care for each patient with dignity, skill, and compassion.

Cornerstone Forward: Progress with Care and Intention

In the meantime, meaningful progress continues across the organization. A full-scale mock-up inpatient room has been created and is being reviewed by clinical and support staff, allowing teams to walk through layouts, assess workflow, and recommend refinements that enhance both patient experience and staff efficiency. At the same time, offices are being thoughtfully relocated so that patient rooms previously taken offline for administrative use can be returned to service. This careful planning will allow all 32 inpatient beds to remain operational during construction, ensuring uninterrupted access to care for our community.

We are also pleased to share that tangible investments are already underway. New inpatient beds have been purchased, dialysis machines are being replaced, and recent state funding will further enhance renovations within the dialysis unit. In addition, Adirondack Health has been awarded $1 million for dialysis upgrades through a Congressionally Directed Spending appropriation, made possible with the support of Elise Stefanik and Kirsten Gillibrand—a significant step forward in strengthening critical services for our region.

As the seasons change in the Adirondacks, our commitment to strengthening care at Adirondack Health remains steadfast. The Cornerstone Capital Project continues to move forward with care, intention, and momentum—guided by one clear goal: creating modern, welcoming inpatient rooms that support healing, dignity, and comfort for every patient who walks through our doors.

Following the extraordinary response from our community through the Foundation’s Cornerstone Capital Campaign, Adirondack Health is finalizing important financial steps to support the project, including refinancing existing debt in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture. While this process has taken longer than originally anticipated due to recent federal government shutdowns, our leadership team remains actively engaged to complete all approvals and keeps us on track to break ground on the Cornerstone Project this spring. The total project cost is currently projected at approximately $21 million, representing a significant and carefully stewarded investment in the future of inpatient care for our region.

The General Hospital of Saranac Lake was founded in 1911 through the dedicated efforts of public citizens and formally presented to the Saranac Lake community on March 11, 1913. From the very beginning, this hospital has existed because neighbors came together to care for neighbors.

Adirondack Health Introduces Advanced Intravascular Ultrasound Technology to Enhance Vascular Care

Adirondack Health has expanded its vascular care capabilities through the addition of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) technology, a state-of-the-art imaging modality that enhances the diagnosis and treatment of complex vascular disease for patients in the North Country. The equipment has been operational since mid-December and is already contributing to improved patient care.

The acquisition of the IVUS system was made possible through donor support from the 2025 Adirondack Health Foundation Summer Gala. Philanthropy played a critical role in bringing this technology to the region, reflecting the ongoing reality that charitable investment is essential—not optional—for sustaining high-quality rural health care. Donor generosity enables Adirondack Health to implement advanced tools and procedures that may not otherwise be accessible in rural settings.

Claude Roland, MD, vascular specialist at Adirondack Health, noted that IVUS represents a substantial advancement for patients who may otherwise be required to travel long distances to receive comparable care. IVUS technology provides a detailed, 360-degree intraluminal view of the artery, allowing clinicians to assess blockages, evaluate stent placement, and tailor interventions in real time. These capabilities contribute to improved procedural safety, reduced need for repeat interventions, and stronger long-term outcomes.

Unlike traditional angiography, which depends predominantly on contrast dye and X-ray imaging, IVUS incorporates a miniature ultrasound probe mounted on a catheter to generate high-resolution intravascular images. This technology allows for:

More precise evaluation of blockages , assisting clinicians in distinguishing soft plaque from calcified disease and determining severity.
Improved stent placement and sizing , reducing complications related to under-expanded or malpositioned stents.
Enhanced safety , including the potential reduction of contrast exposure and radiation dosage for patients at increased risk, such as those with chronic kidney disease.

For patients living throughout the North Country, many of whom are located far from major metropolitan medical centers, the availability of IVUS-guided care at Adirondack Health offers significant benefits. These include reduced travel, improved continuity of care, and access to advanced vascular interventions within their local community.

“Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our 2025 Summer Gala donors, Adirondack Health can now offer advanced vascular technology right here in the Adirondack Park,” said Heather Bumsted, board chair of the Adirondack Health Foundation. “Their vision ensures that patients across our region have access to the highest level of care close to home, and this new equipment will make a meaningful difference for years to come.”

The IVUS system will support a range of vascular procedures, including the management of peripheral arterial disease, complex stenting, and minimally invasive interventions intended to restore blood flow and prevent conditions such as limb loss, myocardial infarction, and stroke.

The implementation of intravascular ultrasound reflects Adirondack Health’s ongoing commitment to improving access to care, enhancing patient outcomes, and strengthening the delivery of high-quality health services across the Adirondack region.

Ulrich Receives Meghan E. Handler Excellence in Nursing Award

Dustin Ulrich, RN, received the 2025 Meghan E. Handler Excellence in Nursing Award for his professionalism, empathy and commitment to continuous learning. A 2023 graduate of North Country Community College, Ulrich began on the medical-surgical unit before transitioning to the intensive care unit, where he continues to expand his skills and positively influence patient care.

Known for his quiet determination and thoughtful approach, Ulrich pairs strong clinical ability with deeply compassionate care. The award, established by Dr. Richard and Leslie Handler in memory of their daughter, Meghan, honors early-career nurses who show exceptional growth and rapport with patients and colleagues.

“Dustin represents the best of what it means to be a nurse—skilled, kind and always striving to provide the highest quality of care,” said Carrie Reardon, chief nursing officer.

Adirondack Health honored two exceptional nurses during its 2025 Nursing Awards ceremony in December, celebrating the compassion, skill and professionalism that define nursing excellence across the region.

Mader Honored With Nursing Legacy Award

The Nursing Legacy Award—established by Adirondack Health Foundation board member Joan Grabe, RN—recognizes a nurse with more than 15 years of distinguished service, leadership and mentorship. This year’s honoree, Dave Mader, RN, has shaped Adirondack Health’s nursing culture for more than three decades.

Since joining the organization in 1990, Mader has served in nearly every major nursing role, including critical care, dialysis, clinical education, patient care leadership and chief nursing officer. Now serving as clinical documentation improvement specialist, he remains a steady source of guidance and support for nurses at all stages of their careers.

Colleagues describe Mader as calm, thoughtful and deeply trusted mentor whose influence is reflected across programs, leadership teams and the culture of teamwork within the nursing division.

“Dave has shaped generations of nurses in this organization,” Reardon said. “His wisdom, humility and unwavering commitment to compassionate care represent the very best of Adirondack Health.”

Together, the Meghan E. Handler Excellence in Nursing Award and the Nursing Legacy Award reflect the full continuum of nursing excellence at Adirondack Health—from emerging professionals to established leaders whose careers have elevated care throughout the Adirondacks.

Double the Impact: Turn Your Retirement Funds Into Meaningful Giving

Eventually, you’ll likely need to draw on your IRA to help fund your retirement. But if you don’t need all the money, consider this: Donate some to charity and get a tax break.

If you haven’t already withdrawn from your traditional IRA, you must do so or face penalties once you reach 73, or 75 if you were born in 1960 or later. These withdrawals — called required minimum distributions, or RMDs — are taxable and could push you into a higher tax bracket, possibly causing you to pay more taxes on your Social Security benefits and Medicare premiums.

However, by having your RMDs go directly to a qualified charity, you can avoid increasing your income while benefiting a charity whose work you support.

This strategy works best with a traditional IRA — if you have a Roth IRA, you’re not required to take withdrawals.

If you have a traditional 401(k), you’re required to take RMDs, but you can’t move this money directly to a charity. You could, however, roll it over to an IRA and then make the transfer.

Consult with your tax advisor befor e making any of these moves, which could be valuable in your retirement years.

The Decker Legacy: Enduring Gift to Patient Education at Adirondack Health

A Life Dedicated to Healing

Born in Clarkson, New York in 1918, Alfred Decker graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Rochester in 1940 and earned his medical degree with Alpha Omega Alpha honors in 1943. After completing residencies and surgical fellowships in St. Louis, Montreal, and West Virginia, he served in the U.S. Army in Italy, where he rose to the rank of Captain and served as chief of surgery.

Drawn to the Adirondacks—a place where both his father and grandfather had sought healing—Dr. Decker returned to the region after the war. In 1957, he opened a private surgical practice in Saranac Lake, treating patients at three different hospitals and often logging over 24,000 miles annually to serve them. He remained a fixture in regional healthcare for decades, dedicating his life not only to medicine but to strengthening the institutions that supported it.

Dr. Decker chaired Adirondack Medical Center’s 75th Anniversary fundraising campaign, helping to raise $1.3 million to expand the hospital’s surgical facilities—culminating in the dedication of a new surgical wing in his name in 1989. Even after retiring in 1992, he continued to serve on the boards of the Trudeau Institute, St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation Center, and High Peaks Hospice.

Dr. Decker passed away in 2003, but the values he embodied—compassion, service, and commitment to community—live on through the Decker Community Learning Cen ter.

When Dr. Alfred Mills “Fritz” Decker made the decision to leave a gift to Adirondack Health in his estate plans, he was doing more than supporting a cause—he was creating a legacy that continues to change lives today. His generosity laid the foundation for the Decker Community Learning Center, a vital resource at Adirondack Medical Center that empowers patients across the region through trusted health education.

The Center, now led by Linda Savarie, RN, Certified Diabetes Educator, provides personalized support to patients managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and asthma, as well as guidance on nutrition, smoking cessation, and post-operative care. With support from a second legacy gift from his wife, Janet Parker Decker, the Center continues to serve patients from across the North Country—and even from Vermont.

“Legacy gifts like Dr. Decker’s are powerful,” says Dan Hill, Chief Operating Officer at Adirondack Health. “They create the kind of long-term, transformational impact that improves lives well into the future. The Decker Community Learning Center is a shining example of what one person’s generosity can do.”

From Legacy to Impact

The Center was established through his estate gift and strengthened by a subsequent legacy gift from Mrs. Janet Decker, his beloved wife and partner in philanthropy. In their honor, the Decker Learning Center Fund was created to ensure long-term sustainability—supporting everything from educational models and printed resources to diabetes training tools and patient visuals.

Many of the Center’s services are not covered by insurance, making donor support all the more vital. “We truly rely on the generosity of community members and the support of Adirondack Health to make this possible,” says Linda Savarie. “The impact we see is tremendous patients are more informed, more confident, and far better equipped to manage their health when they go home.”

In 2024, the Center served 238 patients, over half of whom were not part of Adirondack Health’s medical home. Services are available to anyone in the community—regardless of where they receive care—and appointments often include hands-on education with insulin pens, continuous glucose monitors, and customized nutritional plans.

“Their generosity has touched hundreds of lives—each one with a story, a family, and a future made brighter because someone cared enough to leave a lasting gift,” Linda reflects.

The Decker Legacy Lives On

The Decker Community Learning Center is more than a physical space. It is the embodiment of a life devoted to healing and a future shaped by thoughtful generosity.

Adirondack Health Foundation to honor Dr. Christopher Hyson for a lifetime of compassionate care

Recognizing the immense strain on Adirondack Health’s providers and patients, he made the selfless decision to postpone his retirement for another year. His willingness to remain on the front lines during a global health crisis reflected his exceptional professionalism and deep commitment to the communities he served.

His dedication extended far beyond the clinic walls. At least twice a month, Dr. Hyson could be found calling upon the local volunteer ambulance corps in Keene to help transport a patient “up the hill” to Adirondack Health. Often, he rode in the ambulance himself, sitting beside the patient to provide comfort and reassurance along the winding mountain roads. Those who know him best say that image—a doctor riding alongside his patient—captures his essence perfectly: present, steady, and deeply caring.

In quieter moments, he found grounding in the natural world just outside his office window. Working in Keene, he often kept the window open to the sound of the Ausable River. Between appointments, he would pause to watch the otters playing along the water’s edge. These brief, peaceful scenes offered perspective and a calming reminder of the importance of slowing down and truly listening, qualities he brought into every patient encounter.

Dr. Hyson often describes primary care as both “roots and branches.” The roots, he explains, are the trusting, sustained relationships physicians build with their patients over many years. The branches stretch outward, representing how primary care reaches into every aspect of medicine—coordinating care, advocating for patients, and supporting the health of entire communities. His philosophy reflects both the resilience and interconnectedness of rural medicine and the core mission of Adirondack Health.

“Primary care physicians like Dr. Hyson are the backbone of healthcare in small towns across America,” said Jennifer Balog, executive director of the Adirondack Health Foundation. “Their resilience, resourcefulness, and humanity keep communities healthy and connected. Dr. Hyson’s service reminds us all of what it truly means to care.”

When informed of the honor, Dr. Hyson said he was “completely floored.”

“I am deeply humbled to have been chosen as the 2026 honoree of Adirondack Health’s Summer Gala and recipient of the Dr. Edward L. Trudeau Award. I see this as a celebration of those of us who have chosen to practice medicine on the front lines of healthcare and focus our abilities and inner resources on the face-to-face care of families and individuals in our communities.”

Saranac Lake, NY - The Adirondack Health Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of four distinguished new members to its Board of Trustees: Clyde Baker, Dr. Ruth Randi, Dr. Barbara A. Dill, and Mary Ann Randall, CRNA. Their combined expertise in community leadership, healthcare, and philanthropy will strengthen the Foundation’s mission to support exceptional patient care and advance critical health initiatives across the Adirondack region.

“We are thrilled to welcome these exceptional individuals to the Foundation Board,” said Heather Bumsted, Chair of the Adirondack Health Foundation Board of Trustees. “Each brings a deep commitment to service and a passion for supporting local healthcare. Their leadership will play a vital role in ensuring that Adirondack Health remains strong, innovative, and community centered.”

Clyde Baker

A lifelong Saranac Lake resident and active community leader, Clyde Baker is the youngest of seven children and a graduate of Saranac Lake High School and Clarkson University. Baker has spent more than three decades in leadership at Rice Furniture and has served on numerous community boards, including the Saranac Lake Youth Center, Saranac Lake Business Association, Friends of Mount Pisgah, and the Saranac Lake Central School District Board of Education. His decades of volunteerism—from delivering Thanksgiving meals to supporting the Plein Air Festival—demonstrate his ongoing commitment to strengthening the community he calls home.

Dr. Ruth Randi

A graduate of the Columbia School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Randi practiced alongside her family in private dental practice while serving on Columbia’s part-time faculty. She maintains active memberships with the American Dental Association, New York State Dental Society, and Nassau County Dental Society, where she also serves on the Peer Review board. Deeply dedicated to service, she has volunteered in numerous community roles and participated with her family in dental mission trips to South America through Giving Through Smiles. Dr. Randi and her family enjoy their Adirondack home and look forward to contributing meaningfully to local healthcare initiatives.

Dr. Barbara A. Dill

Dr. Barbara A. Dill has over 20 years of medical leadership to bring to the Foundation Board. She currently serves as Division Director of the OB-GYN Hospitalist Program at Montefiore Wakefield Campus in the Bronx. A graduate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, she completed her residency at George Washington University and a medical simulation fellowship at Jacobi Medical Center. Dr. Dill has served in multiple clinical and governance roles, including as President of the Medical Staff during her time in private practice. A longtime Adirondack visitor with a home on Kiwassa Lake, Dr. Dill looks forward to giving back to the region where she and her husband plan to retire.

Mary Ann Randall, CRNA

With more than 25 years of clinical experience, in Albany, NY, Mary Ann Randall is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. A graduate of Albany Medical College, she worked as a nurse anesthetist at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany for over 23 years. Prior to becoming a CRNA, she worked as a nurse at Albany Medical Center in critical care and renal transplant. She currently works per diem for Samaritan Hospital in Troy NY and for Premier Anesthesia at Adirondack Medical Center. Her deep clinical expertise and appreciation for Adirondack Health’s patient-centered environment make her a valuable addition to the board.

The new trustees join the current 2025 Board of Trustees, led by Chair Heather Bumsted, Vice Chair Heidi Holderied, Treasurer Robert J. Beier, and Secretary Erin Perkins. They will serve alongside an accomplished group of community, clinical, and business leaders dedicated to strengthening the health of the Adirondack region.

From First Contraction to First Cries: Surrounded by Care

Each birth story is unique, different, powerful and for Alex, a mom of two from Wilmington, filled with gratitude for her support from the Adirondack Health women’s health team. She describes herself as an active person who feels fortunate to have had two health pregnancies. She says what made all the difference was not just the expertise of her caregivers, but the way they made her feel at every step: confident and cared for.

“The care I received from Women’s Health, from beginning to end, was great,” Alex said. “The midwives, the doctors, the nurses—I felt very taken care of.”

Her first labor and delivery was long and involved a whole team working together to support her and her baby. Even in those long hours, she remembers feeling surrounded by people who were completely focused on her and her little one. Her second experience was different. “It was just Dr. Burns and a nurse” Alex shared. “I was able to labor naturally as long as I could. The jacuzzi tubs are literally a game changer”

When it was time to deliver, she appreciated how the team listened to what she needed in that moment. “I wasn’t quite ready, and I said, ‘Wait a minute, I need a minute to get my game face on.’ Dr. Burns gave me that time. They put on the TV, I put some music on, and then I was like, okay, we can do this and then he was here.”

Throughout both pregnancies, Alex felt surrounded by knowledge and compassion. She remembers nurse Sarah Burke as “very, very educational” and appreciated the wisdom of longtime nurses like her. “They all love what they do, and it shows. You can tell the difference. It’s second nature to them.”

One of her favorite parts of the experience? The view. “The fact that this delivery center is right there, looking out at Lake Colby, is amazing,” she said.

Reflecting on both journeys, Alex’s gratitude shines through: “I love Dr. Burns and I was lucky to have her deliver both of my kids. Honestly, I wouldn’t go anywhere else to have a baby. The women here are in really good hands.”

With expert hands, kind hearts, and even a view of Lake Colby to bring calm in life’s biggest moments, Adirondack Health is where new beginnings feel right at home.

The event drew a strong turnout of 50 dedicated nurses and healthcare professionals, all eager to expand their skills and bring innovative approaches back to their work.

Cornerstone Forward Moves Ahead

The Cornerstone Forward Project at Adirondack Health continues to move steadily ahead, marking a major step toward modernizing inpatient care for our community.

Planning teams are finalizing architectural revisions to the patient room renovations, ensuring each design enhances comfort, safety, and healing. With construction costs increasing nationwide, Adirondack Health is working closely with architects, engineers, and project managers to manage expenses responsibly while preserving the full vision of the project. Based on updated drawings, the total estimated cost for Cornerstone Forward is approximately $21 million.

Phase I of the project—focused on the renovation of inpatient rooms and related infrastructures scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026. To maintain all 35 patient beds during construction, renovations will take place floor by floor over an estimated two-year period. Offices are being relocated to open space, and the third floor is buzzing with activity. New patient beds have been purchased and are ready for delivery once renovations begin.

Phase II will focus on modernizing dialysis and renal care services, ensuring patients across the Adirondacks continue to receive high-quality, lifesaving care close to home. As part of this effort, new dialysis machines have already been purchased to replace aging units that have reached the end of their service life—improving both reliability and the overall patient experience. Adirondack Health’s leadership and government relations teams are also pursuing state and federal funding, including appropriations and grants, to support this critical part of the project.

While national appropriations and construction timelines may shift due to federal delays, Adirondack Health remains firmly committed to advancing Cornerstone Forward. This initiative represents a once-in-a-generation investment in the future of rural healthcare, modern private patient rooms, enhanced accessibility, and a healing environment that reflects the compassion and excellence of Adirondack Health.

The groundwork is being carefully laid today for the hospital tomorrow. Together, we’re building a stronger, more patient-centered Adirondack Health for generations to come.

Celebrating September: Employee Giving Month

This September, employees across our Adirondack Health system came together in an incredible way to support one another and our patients. Throughout Employee Giving Month, colleagues gave generously, proving once again that when we join forces, we can make a lasting difference.

With the leadership of our Employee Giving Committee, chaired by Natalie Miller, RN, and Connie Lawrence, RN, 96 employees made gifts during the month of September raising an amazing $24,045 in support of patient care and community health. We welcomed 20 first-time donors, while 38 chose to increase their existing giving. The most supported funds were the Annual Fund, the Oncology Travel Fund, and the Medical Fitness Center Fund.

In total, 257 employees have supported the Foundation in 2025, a remarkable reflection of commitment and care within our team.

To celebrate our employees and all they do, the Foundation was proud to host a “Make Your Own Sundae” bar with ice cream donated by Stewart’s Shops. And for the entire month, a candy cart roamed the halls, spreading extra sweetness and gratitude to employees throughout the system.

This success is about more than numbers, it’s about the power of coming together as colleagues, neighbors, and friends. This support reflects our shared commitment to care for each other and for every patient who walks through our doors. While the new fluoroscopy unit marks an exciting step forward, fundraising efforts are still underway to fully support this upgrade—as well as the next critical need. The Elevate Health Together Annual Fund Campaign continues through Dec. 31, 2025, with a current focus on raising funds to purchase additional knee replacement instrumentation for Adirondack Health’s MAKO Robotic Surgery System. This investment will allow more patients to benefit from minimally invasive, highly precise joint replacement surgery, helping the health system meet rising demand and improve outcomes.

Adirondack Health is proud to announce a major technology upgrade in its medical imaging department with the installation of the Luminos Agile Max Fluoroscopy Unit, replacing equipment that had been in service since 2009. This vital advancement was made possible thanks to the generosity of community donors through the Elevate Health Together Annual Fund Campaign.

Serving more than 2,000 patients annually, fluoroscopy is a critical diagnostic tool that allows real-time imaging of internal structures for a wide range of procedures.

“The new fluoroscopy equipment will allow us to deliver safer, faster, and more accurate imaging,” said Director of Medical Imaging Jim Sabin. “Patients will benefit from improved comfort and lower radiation exposure, while the reliability of the updated technology will ensure uninterrupted care.”

The Luminos Agile Max enhances image quality while reducing radiation exposure, improving both patient and staff safety. It also enables Adirondack Health to expand its capabilities and offer a more seamless experience for patients undergoing procedures such as GI studies, joint injections, speech therapy and more.

This investment reflects Adirondack Health’s ongoing commitment to strengthening rural healthcare, a growing challenge across the country. As the only full-service health system within the Adirondack Park, Adirondack Health serves a wide geographic area, ensuring that both year-round residents and the many visitors who travel to the region each year have access to high-quality care—right here, close to home.

Finding Strength in the Journey: Jennifer’s Story

Hear Jen's experience with the Merrill Oncology Travel Fund

Even now, she still guards her story carefully, unsure how to let others in. Cancer had forced her into a world of vulnerability she wasn’t ready for, and sharing it felt like losing control over a part of herself.

Radiation will be next, requiring long drives back and forth for treatments. The financial burden will be heavy, and every trip means time away from work, more gas, more expenses. It wasn’t until one of her friends mentioned the Oncology Travel Fund that she realized help was available.

“I had no idea something like that even existed,” Jennifer said. “And I wouldn’t have known if my friend hadn’t told me.”

With the support of the fund, she will be able to get to her treatments without the added stress of financial strain. It was a relief she hadn’t expected, a kindness she hadn’t asked for but desperately needed.

She hadn’t realized how many people had come together to make that possible—donors, fundraisers, strangers who had no idea whose life they were touching. That’s why, when she heard about Skate to Elimin8, a fundraiser that supports the travel fund, she knew she had to be a part of it.

“I couldn’t give much, but I could give my time,” she said.

Jennifer first felt the lump in the shower one evening. She paused, her fingers going back over the spot, a quiet unease settling in her chest. But her annual mammogram was coming up soon, so she waited, telling herself she would mention it at her appointment.

When the day of her screening arrived, she pointed it out to the technician. What followed was a whirlwind—first the mammogram, then an ultrasound, then a biopsy. The initial results came back negative, but Jennifer knew something wasn’t right.

“I knew my body,” she said. “And I knew this wasn’t normal.”

She pushed for more answers, and soon, her worst fears were confirmed. What started as a single lump turned into a series of surgeries—a lumpectomy, then a partial mastectomy, and finally, a full mastectomy when doctors found cancer in her lymph nodes.

A registered dietitian by profession, Jennifer had spent years helping others lead healthier lives, guiding them on their wellness journeys. But when it came to her own battle, she struggled with how much to share.

“I kept it quiet,” she admitted. “Only my closest friends knew. It was just… easier that way.”

This year, she not only participated in the event, but she also volunteered—helping where she could, cheering on the skaters, and sharing her story in small, careful ways to encourage others to support the cause. It was her way of giving back, her quiet way of making sure the next person who needed help could find it.

“Cancer takes so much,” Jennifer said, “but it hasn’t taken my hope. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that help often comes from places you never expect.”

With radiation ahead and a long road still to walk, she knew one thing for sure: she wasn’t facing it alone.

Adirondack Health receives $10,000 Parkinson’s Foundation Grant to support life-changing fitness programming

SARANAC LAKE – The Adirondack Health Foundation has received a $10,000 community grant from the Parkinson’s Foundation to support specialized Parkinson’s Disease Fitness Programming at Adirondack Health’s Medical Fitness Center in Lake Placid.

This program provides exercise classes designed specifically for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, helping them maintain mobility, improve strength, and enhance their quality of life.

For the past five years, Lake Placid Medical Fitness Director Traci Marie Wagner has dreamed of developing a Parkinson’s-focused program at the medical fitness center. She said access to specialty programming like this is incredibly limited in the region and that her interest in developing more of it stems from a personal place.

“It began when my grandmother was diagnosed with the disease,” Wagner said. “My team and I started exploring evidence-based programs to bring into our center, but our efforts were paused with the onset of COVID-19. A turning point came when local community members visited to share how the facility was helping them manage their Parkinson’s symptoms. Their stories led us to pursue PWR!Moves certification, and our coaches eagerly stepped up to specialize in it. I don’t think any of us fully realized at the time just how impactful this work would be for so many.”

Wagner said receiving the Parkinson’s Foundation grant allows the Lake Placid Medical Fitness Center to continue expanding the program. Thanks to the grant, two new group-based programs will be launched in 2026.

“It gives current and future patients access to individualized fitness support that truly improves the quality of their lives,” she said. “I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity and the positive impact it will bring to our community.”

The Parkinson’s Disease Fitness Program offers a variety of evidence-based fitness opportunities, including balance training, strength work, and movement exercises tailored to the needs of people living with Parkinson’s disease. Classes are led by trained instructors who understand the disease’s challenges and adapt programming to all ability levels.

"Over the past year, it’s been my privilege to work closely with individuals living with Parkinson’s and witness their determination firsthand,” said Lake Placid Medical Fitness Center Coach Mike Leggett. “Exercise takes courage, and that it can be difficult, demanding, and at times frustrating. But, when we summon that courage and train both body and mind, incredible transformations can happen.

Leggett said he’s seen those transformations unfold in real time, for real people, making real progress in the center’s Parkinson’s programming.

“I have been behind the scenes talking with clients and caregivers from the moment we first announced this program, and they have shared with me how transformative these classes have been for them – not just physically, but mentally,” said Adirondack Health Fitness Manager Andrea Chamberlain. “Watching the program grow and hearing from the patients and caregivers firsthand about the impact it has on their lives has been meaningful. They’ve experienced a shift in mindset, a belief that living well with Parkinson’s is possible."

Grateful Patient: The Gift of Personalized Care at Adirondack Health

Lila's Grateful Patient Story

The result was a birth experience filled with compassion and calm. With her chosen playlist playing in the background, every member of the team explained each step along the way, offering the clear communication she valued most. When her son was born, nurses helped him begin nursing right away and supported Lila in keeping him by her side throughout recovery.

“The nurses were incredible,” she recalled. “They really read the room, helped me feel calm, and went out of their way to make sure I had the experience I hoped for.” She remembers one nurse, Sarah, chatting with her about her own animals just before surgery, a small but meaningful moment that eased her nerves.

Lila and her family recovered in a room overlooking the lake, where she had time to soak in the peace of the moment. She felt the benefits of being in a smaller hospital, where tailored care and a sense of calm surrounded her family.

Looking back, she describes her son’s birth as great experience. “It really was a team effort. I felt heard and seen and so grateful to have this level of care available in our community.”

For families across the Adirondacks, having obstetric care close to home brings comfort and peace of mind. For Lila, it meant a birth experience she looks back on with deep gratitude.

When Lila and her family made their home in the North Country, she never imagined how important her local hospital would become to her growing family. As a large animal veterinarian, she knew the challenges of working in rural areas and she understood firsthand how critical it is to have skilled, compassionate care close to home.

When she was expecting her son, Lila chose Adirondack Health because of the personal, attentive care she knew she could find in a smaller hospital setting.

From the very beginning, she felt supported and heard. “I really felt like everyone listened and did their best by me,” she shared. Together with Dr. Eve Burns, she created a plan for a scheduled cesarean that reflected her hopes for the experience. To make that possible, her doctor even rearranged her schedule so Lila could be the only planned surgery that day, ensuring the team could give her their full attention.

SpeakSooner and Adirondack Health’s oncology department team up to improve healthcare communication

“With the SpeakSooner book, all of that information is there,” Smith said. “As a cancer patient, it’s easier [for you] to go through it than it is for your family to go through it. I want to have all the answers before I tell my family.”

Adirondack Health cardiology PA Jessica Garnsey and Director of Business Development and Provider Relations Luke Meissner were both part of the initial SpeakSooner committee at Adirondack Health.

“We’re creating a model so that we’re using the same script,” Garnsey said. “So we’re all on the same page about how we communicate and how we listen, and that is going to improve patient outcomes.”

Meissner said when utilized correctly and early in treatment, SpeakSooner can also help to define a patient’s wishes.

“Sometimes those communications can be difficult and scary. We [as clinicians] can have our personal feelings mixed in, so having a guide for how to have these conversations in a way that doesn’t take into account these personal feelings and let them get in the way, is valuable,” Meissner said.

Ames said the oncology team has embraced the SpeakSooner guide and conducts a monthly meeting where everyone gets to be involved with each patient’s care.

“It also has a benefit internally for our recruitment and retention,” Meissner said. “Ethical dilemmas and moral stress are huge challenges for healthcare workers, impacting their ability to continue working in the healthcare environment. I think a big part of the ethical dilemmas healthcare workers face is when they feel they’re not doing a service for the patient.”

“It has given them a forum to express these things and given them validation that what they’re seeing and what they’re observing is important,” Dr. Mastrianni said. “The guide has given them a way to do it, and it’s been an incredible tool for us.”

The entire oncology team now meets monthly to present complex patient cases, using a framework of questions prompted by the SpeakSooner guide. The meeting is an opportunity to re-evaluate every step of a patient’s care.

“The first question asked by Dr. Mastrianni at each meeting is ‘Did we do the right thing medically?’” Ames said. “And he educates all the staff on the decisions that went into a patient’s treatment plan. People love to learn. We go through these sets of questions that mimic the guide and we’re all learning from each other from the different conversations and experiences we’ve all had with these patients. At the very end, the last question is, ‘Is there anything we can do better?’ We always come away with an improved understanding of the complicated cases. It better prepares everyone.”

Ames hopes other Adirondack Health teams will take an interest in utilizing the SpeakSooner guide in their departments and welcomes questions at ext. 2548 or by email at sames@adirondackhealth.org .

“Now that we’ve gone through a lot of the trials and tribulations, we can help others who are interested in learning about how SpeakSooner can work best for them,” Ames said. “The guide is very adaptable.”

Adirondack Health oncology providers are utilizing the SpeakSooner initiative to communicate quickly and efficiently with patients. It goes beyond diagnosis and treatment, encouraging patients to voice their questions and concerns earlier in their care. It also helps ease patients into discussions about difficult choices like advanced directives and end-of-life care.

Oncology Nurse Practitioner Sara Ames began working with the Center for Communication in Medicine on its SpeakSooner initiative several years ago. During this time, Ames and the oncology team began re-evaluating their entire process of caring for new cancer patients – from the first time they came in the door. Ultimately, the oncology team developed a method to integrate the SpeakSooner guide into their patient care.

“I felt like I finally found people who really understood how important it was to initiate these conversations early and thread them throughout a patient’s care and continue it,” Ames said. “My approach to prompting the patients and having them be a part of SpeakSooner is that I am essentially the guide,” Ames said. “The guide is incorporated into my everyday questions.”

Around the same time, oncology welcomed a social worker to its team, Kristina Hybicki, and a nurse coordinator, Jennifer Marshall.

“SpeakSooner is also an opportunity to teach new people who are coming into a close-knit department,” Ames said. “It helps you teach these values.”

“It’s actually having the patient tell you how they feel and how they’re working through the emotional part of a difficult diagnosis,” Hybicki said.

The Center for Communication in Medicine (CCM) is the education division of the Institute of Medical Humanism, a Bennington, Vermont-based nonprofit organization. Since 2001, CCM's educational programs and tools have helped patients and loved ones prepare for conversations with healthcare providers, leading to improved communication about treatment options, quality of life considerations, and supportive care needs. Dr. Bernard Bandman, a founder and the executive director of CCM, established the psychological services program at the cancer center in Bennington in 1988.

Oncologist David Mastrianni said that amazing new treatments bring increased complexity to the conversations clinicians need to have with patients about every aspect of their illness, and SpeakSooner helps facilitate that.

As a registered nurse who received oncology care at Adirondack Health, Mary Smith said that when someone first learns they have cancer, “all you hear is you have cancer.” But then the patient goes home and the questions begin to manifest.

In December 2023, she achieved another milestone—earning Doctor of Nursing Practice.

Jennifer’s commitment to Adirondack Health remained strong throughout her career. Early in her tenure, she found herself on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, working in the COVID clinic, where she helped test and treat patients during one of the most challenging periods in modern healthcare. The experience reinforced her resilience and dedication, deepening her connection to the patients she served.

Now a Nurse Practitioner, she provides care to the very people she grew up with, ensuring that patients in the region have access to high-quality, compassionate healthcare.

Jennifer’s dedication to Adirondack Health extends beyond patient care—she is also deeply committed to giving back. As a participant in the Cornerstone Campaign, she is helping to improve patient care through critical facility updates and renovations.

Brooke Furlong of Long Lake , valedictorian of the Long Lake Central School Class of 2025, who will attend Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire this fall to study nursing.

“From a young age, I felt compelled to help others,” Furlong said. “This is an important value that I have continued to carry with me in every aspect of my life. After joining the Long Lake Rescue Squad as a junior EMT and being able to help others in their time of need, this calling grew stronger.”

The Adirondack Health Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2025 Healthcare Scholarships, awarding $3,500 scholarships to three outstanding local students to support their pursuit of careers in the healthcare field.

This year’s recipients are:

Morgan Groshner of Lake Placid , who currently works per-diem at Adirondack Health and part-time in a SUNY clinical laboratory, will attend SUNY Plattsburgh this fall to study medical technology.

“These scholarships are a major pillar of our efforts at the Foundation to enrich the healthcare workforce in the Adirondacks,” said Heather Bumsted, chair of the Adirondack Health Foundation Board. “We are proud to support these students who are deeply committed to making a difference in our region through compassionate, skilled care.”

Since the program’s inception in 2011, the Adirondack Health Foundation has awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships to students pursuing nursing and allied health careers. The program is open to Adirondack Health employees, their children, retirees, and local community members dedicated to furthering their education in healthcare.

“This scholarship program is a reflection of our dedication to ensuring quality healthcare remains accessible in the Adirondacks,” added Jen Balog, executive director of the Adirondack Health Foundation. “By investing in these students, we are investing in the future of our community.”

Community Raises $8,000 to Support Dialysis Care at Adirondack Health

Dialysis patients typically require treatment three times a week, with each session lasting three to four hours. Adirondack Health’s unit currently operates with nine machines, many of which are nearing the end of their serviceable lives. The funds raised will go directly toward the purchase of a new dialysis machine.

“This donation helps us continue delivering vital care to patients across our region,” said Christina Hayden, Supervisor of the Dialysis Unit at Adirondack Health. “Our patients truly become like family to us, and knowing the community stands behind them means so much.”

The evening was made possible through the generosity of volunteers from the Bloomingdale Auxiliary and the lively entertainment of Frankie and the Moonlighters, who donated their time and talents to the cause.

“Grassroots events like this are the heart of philanthropy,” said Jen Balog, Executive Director of the Adirondack Health Foundation. “They show how deeply healthcare is woven into the fabric of our community. In a moving tribute to resilience and community spirit, more than 150 area residents gathered at the Bloomingdale Fire Station on Saturday, June 21, for a lasagna dinner that raised $8,000 in support of Adirondack Health’s Dialysis Unit—the only treatment center serving patients within a 50-mile radius.

The event was organized by community members and led by Vanessa Columbe, Patient Access Liaison at Adirondack Health, who was inspired to act after learning about the ongoing needs of dialysis patients.

“I knew I needed to do something,” said Columbe. “The Dialysis Unit means so much to families in our region. I always like helping—it just felt natural.”

For Darra, health care close to home is essential, especially for children and families. “We are so fortunate to have this hospital right here.” Quick access for checkups, urgent care, and emergencies is critical and must be paired with quality care and advanced technology to attract top professionals.

For Darra, giving back is personal. She’s chosen to become a monthly donor to the Adirondack Health Foundation because she sees her gift as an investment in her family’s future and in her community’s well-being.

“I give monthly because this hospital has touched every part of my family’s life,” she said. “It’s my way of making sure it’s always here. This isn’t just a hospital, it’s a cornerstone of our community.”

How the Adirondack Health Medical Fitness Center Gave Melissa Her Life Back

“I felt free” Melissa said. “A lot of people, when they’re very ill, feel trapped in a body that’s betraying them. Because I had this one thing I could do; it saved my life.”

That feeling became Melissa’s anchor. It gave her hope and strength when her body gave her nothing else. She would think, “If I can feel this now, I should be able to feel it all the time and I would try to live that feeling for the rest of the day.”

Thanks to a scholarship from the fitness center, Melissa now works one-on-one with a personal trainer. “We’re essentially starting at the beginning” she explained. “Six years of being bedridden, chair-ridden – you don’t recover from that overnight.”

With the gentle guidance of her trainer, she’s rebuilding her strength, her mobility, and her confidence. She’s also found a deep sense of community in the group classes. “Everybody encourages everybody,” she said. “We may not see each other outside the fitness center, but there is a network here. A camaraderie. A shared purpose.”

She remembers wondering if this was the right place for her in the beginning. But what she discovered was something different. “This isn’t a gym, it’s a health center. It allows you to be who you are, where you are, and move towards whatever goal you’ve set for yourself.”

For Melissa, that goal is simple: to walk comfortably up the stairs, to hike Mount Baker, and to swim a mile. “If a 92-year-old man here can get on the treadmill” she said, “then I can too!”

Melissa’s story is a powerful reminder that healing isn’t just physical. She believes the Adirondack Health Medical Fitness Center gave her so much more than movement; it gave her back her life.

In March of 2025, Melissa received the all clear from her oncologists. “Without this facility,” Melissa shared, “I honestly think the outcome would not have been the same.”

Melissa has called the Adirondacks home for over 40 years. An avid skier, hiker, and kayaker, she embraced the outdoors with the same energy she brought to her work as a substitute teacher. But her world changed when she was diagnosed with stage four melanoma, followed by heart complications, and leukemia years later. Her leukemia diagnoses started a six-year battle – one that left her confined to a wheelchair, relearning how to walk.

“The hardest thing to overcome in a serious illness, I think, is depression” Melissa said. “And that’s where this facility was lifesaving.” The treatments that saved her life also left her body devastated, but her most difficult challenge was something deeper. Melissa needed something in her life to help her regain some independence.

With her doctor’s special approval and the incredible care of the staff at the Adirondack Health Medical Fitness Center, Melissa was allowed into the pool. Because she was immune-compromised, this meant there needed to be extra precautions - alone in her own lane, arriving in a wheelchair, and unable to speak face-to-face with others. Still, the staff made it possible. “Jeff and Mike would sanitize the changing room before I got there and then helped me into the water.”

And in the water, something extraordinary happen ed.

His journey with Adirondack Health began in an unexpected way—through a fight for survival. After undergoing surgery in New York City, Bill initially felt fine and was eager to return to his beloved Adirondacks. But during the long drive home, something felt off. A wave of sickness washed over him, and he quickly realized something was wrong. The discomfort worsened, and by the time he reached Lake Placid, he was in excruciating pain. A concerned family friend, recognizing the seriousness of his condition, suggested that he go to Adirondack Health for care. What he didn’t know was that a hole had formed in his bladder, leading to a life-threatening infection.

At the hospital, his wife was faced with an agonizing decision: transfer him elsewhere or trust Adirondack Health. The hospitalist looked her in the eye and said, "We can do this." She placed her faith in the hospital, and for ten agonizing days in the ICU, it was touch and go. Bill had blacked out, and when he finally woke up three days later, he had no idea what had happened. But the doctors and nurses of Adirondack Health, including the compassionate and skilled nurse, Judy Strack, refused to give up on him. Their care and dedication saved his life.

As Bill recovered, his gratitude grew. Adirondack Health had been there at his most desperate moment, and in the years that followed, they continued to care for him. When he experienced a transient ischemic attack (TIA), a "mini stroke," they diagnosed and treated him quickly. When he needed answers, they provided them. He never felt like just another patient, he felt like family.

“They gave me more time with my family.” “How could I not give something back?”

At 82 years old, Bill’s life is a testament to perseverance, service, and gratitude. His journey has been shaped by his time in the Marines, a long career on Wall Street, and a steadfast dedication to helping others. But what truly defines him is his enduring connection to the Adirondacks and his deep appreciation for Adirondack Health.

Bill’s connection to the Adirondacks is rooted in generations of family history. His father and uncle attended Northwood in the 1920s, and childhood vacations in the region fostered a love for the area that never faded. In the late 1990s, Bill and his family built their home in Lake Placid, turning a cherished destination into their permanent retreat.

Years later, Bill once again turned to Adirondack Health when Dr. Lieb, during a routine cystoscopy, discovered the original hole in his bladder. This unexpected discovery from years before led to further medical procedures, reinforcing Bill’s trust in the hospital’s exceptional care. Time and again, Adirondack Health was there for him, ensuring his health and well-being.

Giving back became a natural extension of his gratitude. Bill wanted others to receive the same compassionate care that had saved him, so he became a devoted monthly donor. “They gave me more time with my family,” he says. “How could I not give something back?”

Frozen Resolve, Warm Hearts: Tristan Glanville’s Journey from Injury to Compassionate Healing

On a crisp winter day along the back trails of Lake Placid, Tristan Glanville was skiing on a trail he had traversed countless times before, confident in its familiar embrace and the serene beauty of nature. The snow-covered landscape and the gentle crunch of his skis on fresh powder painted a picture of tranquility—until one sudden misstep changed everything. In an instant, Tristan suffered a severe shoulder injury, dislocating his joint and tearing tendons.

Deep in the snow, Tristan faced a heart-wrenching decision. Afraid to stop moving for fear of worsening his condition, he embarked on an arduous trek—a mile-long hike back to his car. Each painful step in the biting cold was a testament to his resilience, and his desperate need for help propelled him forward until he finally reached the shelter of his vehicle.

From there, Tristan's journey took him to the emergency department at Adirondack Health, where a new chapter in his recovery began. The ER staff greeted him with immediate, compassionate care, a perfect blend of clinical efficiency and genuine empathy. Swift diagnostic tests and X-rays confirmed the extent of his injuries, and it wasn’t long before a familiar and reassuring face emerged.

2025 Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer raises more than $26,200 to support oncology travel fund and cancer research

“Early on in my cancer journey, I decided that cancer was not going to define me,” Finn said. “I had two choices, lay down and let cancer take over or stand up and fight, and that’s what I’ve been doing ever since. That’s my journey. Not everyone will have that same journey or be on that same path.”

Finn credited her excellent treatment and two-time survival to oncologist Dr. David Mastrianni and the whole team at Adirondack Medical Center’s Merrill Oncology Center.

“I’m in a unique position because they’re not just my caregivers. They are my colleagues and my friends. So I had a different experience than some patients may have but I got the same great care.,” Finn said.

SARANAC LAKE – After taking a year off, the Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer fundraiser returned to the Olympic Oval in Lake Placid, raising more than $26,200 for Adirondack Health’s Merrill Center for Oncology Travel Fund and the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation’s cancer research.

More than 111 participants fundraised for the event, which took place Saturday, Feb. 22 – the 45th anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice,” where the U.S.A. Olympic Hockey team defeated the Soviet Union for the gold medal.

This year’s guest speaker, Kristin Finn, made the day even more special for Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer organizer Adirondack Health, as Finn has been a nurse and educator with the organization for more than 30 years. Finn is a two-time breast cancer survivor and in her most recent battle in 2019 utilized the Merrill Oncology Center’s Travel Fund as she required further oncology care in New York City. Finn said she was grateful that the travel fund meant the cost of the travel to access the care was one less source of stress during an already challenging time.

The Merrill Oncology Center’s Kristina Hybicki, who is a social worker, spoke about the importance of the travel fund. She said over the past five years, more than $41,000 has been received for the fund, which assists income-eligible oncology patients.

“For many cancer patients, getting to and from treatment is one of the biggest challenges they face,” Hybicki said. “Some don’t have reliable transportation, while others simply cannot afford the cost of multiple trips to the clinic and larger cancer care centers outside of the Adirondacks. No one should have to choose between receiving life-saving care and worrying how they will get there.”

Also speaking that day were emcee Stewart Hemsley, Vice President of Events and Sports Programs Management Rebecca Dayton, and the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation’s Lauren Anderson.

The Next Phase of the Cornerstone Project: Enhancing Patient Rooms and Renovating Dialysis Space

The Cornerstone Campaign officially concluded on December 31st, marking a remarkable achievement of $12.5 million raised from 688 donors. This milestone has laid the foundation for a transformative initiative to modernize patient rooms on the second and third floors and renovate the dialysis space. With the campaign complete, we are now moving forward with the next phase of the Cornerstone Project to ensure the best possible patient experience.

A recent planning meeting took place to assess the next steps in the renovation process. The project team is working diligently to balance patient needs, financial feasibility, and infrastructure improvements to enhance patient care. This effort is a collaborative partnership with the Board of Trustees, administration, and our medical colleagues, who deeply understand these spaces and the needs of our patients to continue providing the best possible care.

Another key aspect of this phase is the renovation of the dialysis space, ensuring a more efficient and comfortable environment for patients requiring dialysis treatments. The upgrades will enhance the quality of care and improve patient experience for those relying on this critical service.

"I have had the privilege of meeting many of our generous donors throughout the years of this campaign, and their passion for these room upgrades and renovations is truly inspiring," said Jennie K. Frenette, Director of Med-Surg. "Their commitment to improving the patient’s experience is the driving force behind these important enhancements."

"We remain committed to delivering a modernized and patient-centered space," said Dan Hill, Chief Operations Officer. "While the costs have increased, our goal is to make strategic adjustments that prioritize patient care, staff efficiency, and fiscal responsibility."

The team is continuing to refine plans and collaborate with stakeholders to move the project forward efficiently.
